While the interior does not need to be regularly painted like the exterior does, it should be painted, on average, every three to ten years.
The amount of time in between paintings is contingent on the type of paint applied and whether or not proper prep work was done. You also have to factor in normal wear and tear. Rooms that are used more often will require painting more frequently.
For example, your hallway typically sees a lot of traffic. As a result, halls and corridors can collect many unsightly marks, including dents, cracks, or scuffs. If the paint in the hall is a premium washable paint, the area will need to be repainted every three years.
Repainting a Child’s Bedroom
The paint in an adult’s bedroom will last longer than the paint applied to a child’s bedroom. For children’s bedroom walls, choose a paint that is top-quality with a high sheen. Paints of this type can be washed, and are therefore more resilient.
You might think about painting one section of a child’s bedroom walls with chalkboard paint. Doing this will encourage the child to doodle on this specific area. While you normally need to repaint a child’s bedroom every three years, an adult’s bedroom can be repainted about every five years.
Giving a New Look to a Living Area or Dining Room
The paint in a dining or living room will normally last for a longer span of time. Therefore, the reason for painting is often due to a change in the living space. Many rooms of this type are generally repainted approximately every seven years.
Freshening Up the Kitchen or Bathroom
Kitchens and bathrooms need repainting more often, as these rooms facilitate a good deal of activity. The paint used in a kitchen should be washable to maintain the paint longer. Never use a matte finish in a bathroom or kitchen.
If your bathroom or kitchen is well ventilated, you can expand the time between paintings. The frequency for repainting these rooms of the house is normally every four or five years, depending on the type of paint you use and, again, how you prepare the surface.
Repainting Your Home’s Exterior
With respect to the exterior, the surface and the type of paint you use should be your gauge. Additionally, the preparation and application also contribute to the longevity of the paint. If the exterior has been properly prepared for painting and is painted correctly, it should only need repainting every seven years or so for wood siding.
If the exterior is made of aluminum, a paint job should last for about five years, and for about six years on stucco. The paint on cement fiberboard siding can last as long as 15 years. You should touch up the trim for an unpainted brick house every five years or so, and should repaint a painted brick house approximately every 20 years.
